The fear of vomiting is probably one of the world's strangest fears. Of course, everyone is afraid of vomiting – nobody likes to vomit. But for people with emetophobia, it is a completely different thing. They have an intense, irrational fear of vomiting.

The most obvious kind of fear is of course being afraid that you yourself have to vomit. That is an unpleasant experience, and it is only natural to be afraid of it.

But some people are so afraid of vomiting that they will not get on a ship, or a train, or an airplane, or even a car. Now imagine that – that certainly has a negative impact on a person's life.

Some people are afraid of seeing other people vomit. That's why they will not spend any time with children. There are even women who would actually like to have children but avoid getting pregnant because they are not just afraid of the morning sickness themselves, but also of in the future having to see their children vomit. You really should not let one fear have so much power over such an important decision in your life.

But what can you do about it?

It is not easy to try to overcome a fear of vomiting. Phobias are never easy to handle.

A lot of people go to see a psychotherapist or a psychoanalyst. It is good to talk with somebody, so that you can get off what is on your mind, and not feel alone and isolated.

But the problem with psychoanalysis is that it often takes a lot of time and is charged by the hour, and you could end up spending thousands of dollars. Will it help you? Yes, it will make you feel better. But when it will help you to overcome your fear of throwing up is a completely different story. In many cases, it does not.

Whatever the cause of your vomiting fear is – instead of focusing on the cause, you should focus on a solution, so that you can resolve this fear and get over it.
