Fear Or Phobia – Do We Care Which Or is it the Result That Matters

I recently saw a friend on mine with a phobia of dogs that had generalized through to other animals and this is what can happen. Our best friend, our unconscious mind, decides to make sure nothing will harm us and creates a 'good old' fear for other things as well. The intention is to keep us safe and protected and in order to do so generalises our initial fear to other areas of our life.

So now, we not only spend our time thinking of the first thing that scared us but all the other things and other times where we can be scared. Whilst the positive intention of this fear or phobia is to keep us safe the problem is, do we feel safe and protected now with all these thoughts and pictures in our head? Absolutely NOT!

If you suffer from a phobia or fear you will know this is a problem. The good news is if we can learn to have a phobia in a millisecond, trigger it without thinking and generalize it to other areas of our life, we can do the reverse easily. That is, learn how not to react in the old way. In fact, learn to act in the way you want to act and trigger it that way without thinking. As you do this your unconscious mind will generalize this new, desired way into other areas of your life.

Brian created his phobia when he was really young, about 2 years old, when a dog tried to bite his face. It did not succeed but the fear and the need for protection was learnt there and then. The thing is, are all dogs the same? Would all his life experiences of being okay between now and then be a better resource than the fear and panic created by seeing a dog, even way over in the distance?

Of course all dogs are not like that one and of course our whole set of life experiences would be a better resource. That is exactly what we explored when we worked together, I will explain a little more in a minute.

This also reminded me of another one of my friends, she had a phobia of spiders (notice the use of the word 'had'). She was convinced she first experienced this about the age of seven, when she was chased by someone with a spider at school. (I'm not sure what the spider was trying to learn at school?) Anywhere, with skillful questioning and empathy (well I am writing this and you were not there) we discovered this was not the start of this phobia. It actually occurred when she was about three years old when she saw her big, lovable Grandad coming down stairs as white as a sheet and so scared because he had seen a spider. Her unconcious mind thought “if my big lovable Grandad is scared of spiders then I have to be too!”

So are these people still afraid are they living their life constantly thinking about what scares them?

You can guess the answer ~ of course they are not, no way.

The thing is, when we let go of anything that holds us back we can use what we learn to pleasantly affect other areas of our life. We become more confident, at ease some may say be the real me and it never amazes me how far the ripples of our clients change spread because we know it will.

A fear of heights is generally not a great disadvantage as people who are aware that they have this fear can easily take measures to avoid exposure. Some people fear any level of height and can not stand on a chair or step ladder, in case they will fall. Whilst it may not be cruel to their well being, anyone with a fear of heights could try to extend the heights at which they will feel comfortable, with the possibility that by doing this it will create in them an increased sense of self-confidence.

“Why are so many people afraid of the dentist?” Quite frankly, I do not know. As for myself I have no fear. Then again, I am the one holding the drill. However, I do have some theories and suggestions.

As a patient you should think about why you have fear. Was there an event in the dental chair that lead to this emotion? Did you feel pain and your dentist did not believe you? Was there improper language or overt advances cast upon you? Did you feel as though you did not know what was going on before the treatment was started? Furthermore, was the cost of the treatment not discussed in detail? Any of the above would scare me.
